Nakahara, Gladys Emiko
About the author: Gladys Nakahara was born in Tokyo and grew up bilingually while attending U.S. military base schools and an international school in Japan. She obtained her BA and MA at the University of Hawaii, after which she studied at Kansai Gaikokugo Daigaku in Osaka. Upon returning to Hawaii, she obtained a PhD in Japanese literature while teaching at the University of Hawaii.
2003 0-7734-6626-6Despite Ryôjinhishô’s monumental importance in classical Japanese literature, this work has never been translated into English in its entirety before. Along with the complete English translation, with annotations and transcriptions, this study also contains a discussion imayô and its place in the continuity of the genre of Japanese songs from antiquity to the time of imayô. The songs were originally compiled by the retired Emperor Go-Sirakawa (1127-1292).
