Street, Jack D.

Jack D. Street, in his position as Moore Professor of Modern Languages, has taught both French and Italian and their literatures at Beloit College. He is the co-editor, with Rod Uralas, of The Italian Theater of the Grotesque: A New Theater for the Twentieth Century, An Anthology (The Edwin Mellen Press, 2003).He has lived, studied and done research extensively in France and Italy. The use of the French language in the Valle d’Aosta, Italy is the subject of several of his articles published in reviews in the United States and Italy. Other research projects include Marcel Proust’s A la Recherche du temps perdu and Emile Zola’s La Bête humaine.

This anthology fills a lacuna in the investigation of European avant-garde theater, from Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi to the New Theater of the Absurd. The introduction justifies the place of the Italian Theater of the Grotesque, and the text remedies the lack of access to its plays by translating the ones included in the anthology into English. Of the seven representative plays, five have never been translated into English before.
