A CRITICAL, DUAL-LANGUAGE EDITION OF QUADRAS AO G脭STO POPULAR / QUATRAINS IN THE POPULAR STYLE BY PORTUGUESE WRITER FERNANDO PESSOA
2003 0-7734-6586-3
Fernando Pessoa is one of the greatest poets of the twentieth century. This dual-language format makes Quadras ao G么sto Popular/Quatrains in the Popular Style accessible to scholars who do not read Portuguese, and the preface and notes add a voice to the important, fruitful, ongoing debates about the role of the translator and the principles that should guide literary translation. Fernando Pessoa was himself a translator as well as a poet, translating Elizabeth Barrett Browning鈥檚 Sonnets from the Portuguese, and Poe鈥檚 The Raven and Annabel Lee, among others. Most of the 325 quatrains were written in the last two years of Pessoa鈥檚 too-short life. They are not readily available now even in Portuguese, and this is the first English translation to appear, making this edition valuable to all literary scholars.

This translation of Anfitri茫o, ou J煤piter e Alcmena by Ant么nio Jos茅 da Silva makes this remarkable play on the exploits of Jupiter and the conception of Hercules available in English for the first time. The Hero and Leander Theme in Iberian Literature, 1500-1800: An Anthology of Translations
2006 0-7734-5694-5
The Hero and Leander theme enjoyed tremendous vogue during the Renaissance. This book offers English translations of works by twenty-three writers, including Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Cam玫es, Francisco de Quevedo, and Luis de G贸ngora. The texts were all originally published between 1500 and 1800; most of them were written in Castilian Spanish, but there are also examples from Portuguese, Valencian, and Asturian. The literary forms represented include sonnets, ballads, odes, a prose narrative, a full-length play, and three long pieces of narrative verse. The book includes a critical and historical introduction, brief comments on each author and on the special challenges of each translation, an appendix on treatments of the Hero and Leander theme in other art forms, a substantial bibliography, and an index. It is intended as a resource for students of comparative literature and culture.
