About the editor: Sarah Alyn Stacey is Lecturer in French and Director of the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies at Trinity College Dublin. Although her principal area of research is Renaissance literature, she has a particular interest in contemporary French culture, notably Franco-Irish links. She is the editor of Marc-Claude de Buttet’s Amalthée, and Culture and Conflict in Seventeenth-Century France.

The approach adopted is innovative in its diversity: contributors include not only historians, but also literary critics, sporting administrators, a psychologist, and a prominent cyclist and sports writer, and each brings his or her orientation to bear on the subjects treated.
