Here the early 4th-century B.C.E. Chinese text the Mo Tzu is analyzed as a religious document and is found on this basis to be a focussed and consistent text, presenting the Chou dynasty's most structured religious system, providing both the theory and methods for creating an ideal society. This careful study should correct common misunderstandings of the system of early Mohist thought and lead to an appreciation of the originality and boldness of Mo Tzu's utopian vision.
