The writings are prefaced by an extensive introductory essay that provides the most detailed biographical information yet available on Auric, discusses Auric’s relation to the sources in which his writings appeared, and places Auric in the continuum of French composer/critics of the twentieth century.

Reviews
“Through its massive scope, this book is the first to reveal Auric as a musical and intellectual titan who was involved not simply in the creation of art, but in shaping, promoting and preserving art and artists through world wars, technological revolutions, and the blurring of distinctions between ‘classical’ and ‘popular’ music caused by the rise of mass society. As a ‘musician of the century,’ Auric not only composed for genres made possible by new technologies, but shaped the politics of their reception. As a chronicler of ‘the music of our time,’ he sought art and artistry in everything having to do with music, regardless of labels.” – Prof. Colin Roust, Oberlin College
“[The] introductory essay, at more than 50 pages, adds in its own right the most important biographical contribution to Auric’s bibliography to date, significantly surpassing Antoine Goléa’s little book of 1958. The essay gives an excellent overview of Auric’s career while highlighting some of the salient writings. In addition, it presents context and offers analysis and insight that will be useful to those unfamiliar with Auric. From the most important figures of the time (e.g., Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky, Bartok, Messiaen) to the more obscure (e.g., Tibor Harsanyi, Alexandre Tansman, Jean Rivier, Henri Barraud), Auric both chronicles events and offers astute commentary on the music and musicians (composers, conductors, performers) of the time. This book brings together all his writing, which otherwise would have to be gleaned from the many sources in which it appeared.” – Prof. John Hajdu Heyer, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater
“. . . how timely it is to read, in this centenary year, replete with fanfare, of the Diaghilev ballet’s first appearances in Paris, Auric’s discourse on Henri Sauguet’s La chatte, the thoughtful reflection of an eyewitness, on a work about which history has not otherwise been forthcoming. These are but three of the myriad topics by which Carl Schmidt guides us through the thinking of Auric, a mirror of his age.” – Prof. Roland John Wiley, University of Michigan at Ann Arbor
