"Bishop Reginald Heber (1783-1826) composed 'Holy, Holy, Holy' early in his ecclesiastical career, during his tenure as vicar of Hodnet, Yorkshire, intending the piece as a hymn for the Trinity, and basing its text upon a paraphrase of Revelation 4: 8-11. He directed it to be sung as a principal part of the Church of England worship service, placed between the recitation of the Nicene Creed and the sermon."
