The folklore theorist Vladimir Propp (1895-1970) laid the foundation of a syntagmatic (sequential structural) model for complex oral narratives known as wondertales. His central work, Morphology of the Folktale, was published in 1928 and translated into English in 1958, thereafter becoming a cornerstone of structural folktale theory. The ideas in this study constitute a point-by-point review of central aspects of Proppian analysis of his ground-breaking work .

From the Author:
This study is designed for those readers whose interest in folklore and structuralism has brought the name and work of Vladimir Propp to their attention. The present study was designed partially as a clarification and corrective to that 100-year- old theory. But a more in-depth analysis of the great collection of Russian stories used by Propp uncovers new narrative formulae which are incompatible with his single-structure model. This analysis in turn leads to concepts such as concatenation and overlay, which can only be explained by a radically revised and open-ended discussion based upon manifestations of the storyteller’s telos or conceptualization of heroic patterns.
